Statue sculptor to be announced at Mary Barbour Concert

The name of the successful sculptor chosen to create the statue of Mary Barbour will be announced from the stage of the Gala Concert scheduled for this Sunday, 21 February in Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket, the Remember Mary Barbour Association (RMBA) said today.

Maria Fyfe, Chair of the Remember Mary Barbour Association said. “This concert is a part of raising the funds to commission the statue, so it seemed only right to announce the successful candidate here. At long last there will be a new statue of a woman of achievement - achievement not for herself but for the people of Glasgow. This concert will be both a celebration of the statues and of Mary’s life and work.”

In addition to the stars already announced, prominent Scottish actress Libby McArthur has joined the guest list to add drama to the variety of the concert. She will be delivering a speech from Julia Taudevin’s play, Mrs Barbour’s Daughters.

Compering the show is comedian and presenter, Susan Morrison, and the performers will include folk legends, Sheena Wellington, and Arthur Johnstone, rising singer and musician Siobhan Miller, Scottish legends The Whistlebinkies, Gaelic singing star, Maeve Mackinnon, harmonica supremo, Fraser Speirs, and folk-rock recording artists, The Wakes. A local Govan-based community choir – the Govan Allsorts, will bring Mary’s community centre stage!

Compere, Susan Morrison said “Too often we look at history and see the word hero linked only to men who did things in wars of dubious morality The women who stood with Mary fought for something greater. They fought for fairness, for justice and for their communities. They were kitchen table heroes and that is worth celebrating, to inspire a new generation of women to continue the fight.”

In addition to the maquettes of the statues, a new portrait has been painted of Mary Barbour, by Govan artist Daniel Fitzpatrick. He has donated the powerful and striking portrait to the RMBA. The portrait depicts her steely determination but also captures her warmth and compassion, and a series of limited edition signed prints are being created for sale - hopefully in time for the concert!!

Mary Barbour led the successful rent strike of 1915 and went on to play a leading role in the labour movement as a Glasgow Councillor and energetic social reformer. Following an extensive campaign to have her contribution recognised, five sculptors were shortlisted to create a statue of her to be placed in her community of Govan. So far each has created a maquette of a proposed statue . These were unveiled in November and have been toured across Glasgow for people to express their opinion. See them on the Facebook page here.

A galaxy of stars will play at the Gala Concert to raise money for a statue to Govan Rent Strike leader, Mary Barbour, it was announced today. The concert, which is scheduled for 21 February in Glasgow’s Old Fruitmarket, will feature a number of great performers for a night of entertainment, song and music.

Unite's Scottish Secretary, Pat Rafferty said

“Tonight’s gig will be an unabashed celebration of working-class achievement and struggle and also a display of solidarity to argue that decent jobs and decent lives go hand-in-hand with decent employment rights and safe, secure workplaces.”

The trade union movement will be watching this innovative approach to campaigning closely. It is a welcome development in engaging a broader section of people in campaigns, like the Anti-Blacklist Campaign. Associate producers, Fair Pley, continue to work with the Labour Movement and are busy planning an event in tribute to Tony Benn taking place in Glasgow on Sunday 30 November. Their versatility knows no bounds!

May Day Celebrations take shape!

In this weekend's Morning Star there is a preview of some of the next two weeks activities, which you can link to here. The programme is shaping up to be one of the most interesting for some years, although I am probably too close to the original Mayfest to accept the Star's adoption of it for the preview's title!

Obviously one of the highlights is The Great MayDay Cabaret - the second Glasgow version of which is scheduled for Monday May 5 in Glasgow's Oran Mor (tickets still available over the bar for £13 and (+ a booking fee) on line at www.oran.mor.

Starring in Glasgow is last year's headliner, Mark Thomas, and well-known singer-songwriter, Rab Noakes will be appearing at all three events, as will last year's hit, Marxist magician Ian Saville. Comedians Bruce, and Eleanor Morton (no relation, and catch her before she becomes famous!), moothie maestro Fraser Speirs, and political song guru, Arthur Johnstone round off the final (Glasgow) show.


Of course the MayDay marches and rallies are scheduled across Scotland, with the biggest in Glasgow on the 4 May. The main speaker will be author and commentator, Owen Jones. The march assembles in George Square at 11.30 with a collection for food banks in Glasgow. It rallies in the O2 Academy.

Elsewhere there is a book launch for a new print of From the Calton to Catalonia, a fundraising comedy afternoon for Scottish Left Review, a social for Cuba and an appreciation of UCS cartoonist and author, Bob Starret. MayDay Celebrations step up a gear in Glasgow

Things are hotting up as Glasgow delivers the most prominent MayDay celebrations for a number of years. In a major concert, Comedian and activist, Mark Thomas; marxist magician, Ian Saville, and former BBC Young Folk Musicians Siobhan Miller and Jeana Leslie join political song master Arthur Johnstone, and harmonica virtuoso, Fraser Speirs,  in a star studded line-up at the Great MayDay Cabaret that crowns this years’ Friends of MayDay activities tonight.

Mark Thomas said - “It is great that I am able to get back to Glasgow for this MayDay Cabaret. The city’s political activity is well known and it's great that they are revitalising the celebrations for International Worker's Day."The concert is in the city’s Oran Mor from 7.30pm. Tickets are £12.50 from the venue or (including a booking fee) from www.oran-mor.co.uk. The last ones are rapidly going, so get hold of them quick! It is sponsored by the Co-operative Membership.

News is also breaking of an intriguing set planned by singer/writer Dave Anderson. He has been working with the Co-Op Funeralcare Brass band to develop a ‘crossover’ set with different musical strands. Dave said “I’m really looking forward to working with a brass band of the quality of the Co-op. This is a first for me but they have a great reputation as a fine band. I’m sure we’ll deliver a new and exciting set!”

Arthur Johnstone and the Stars band warm 'em up!

This follows a hugely successful MayDay march that wound its way through the city yesterday from George Square (how important it is that the ‘people’s square’ is retained to allow us to gather and rally there) to the O2 Academy in Eglinton Street, where Alvaro Sanchez, the Political Counsellor from the Venezuelan Embassy, Neil Findlay MSP Lilian Macer. UNISON’s Scottish Convenor, Alan Wylie from the No 2 Bedroom Tax campaign, and disability campaigner, Tommy Gorman addressed a busy rally. 

These are the highlights of a range of activity in the two weeks around MayDay that ranges from walks to comedy, to films and theatre.

The successful film, The Happy Lands, returned to Glasgow yesterday afternoon. Shown again at the GFT, this great film deals with the General Strike and the subsequent lock-out in a pit village in Fife. Made by Theatre Workshop with local community volunteers and actors, this was a hit of the recent Glasgow Film Festival.

Another film is being screened by the Scottish Cuba Solidarity Campaign. Will the real Terrorist please stand up? will be shown at their social evening in the STUC on Friday 10 May at 7.30. Free but ticketed. Tickets on the door.

The highly-praised talk by Scottish composer, Bill Sweeney on Music and the Working Class Movement, has been revived by the Morning Star Campaigns Committee as part of their Our Class, Our Culture series. This year at the STUC on the evening of Wednesday May 8. At 7.00pm, Free.

Two other exhibitions look good - the Rock against Racism archive exhibition - currently at Platform at the Bridge in Easterhouse, and the Street Level photo gallery exhibition of Willy Romer’s photographs of Weimar Germany. On until May 26.

Songs of Struggle heads for successful night

The star-studded line-up of the Songs of Struggle concert taking place at Celtic Connections has meant the concert has now completely sold out! Those lucky people who have tickets are sure of a superb set, tonight (29 January) at the Mitchell Theatre.

The hugely experienced and talented musician, Rab Noakes and harmonica virtuoso Fraser Speirs have added their names to a setlist that already boasts political and folk must-haves Sheena Wellington and Arthur Johnstone, folk legend Alastair McDonald and rock/blues performer Dave Anderson. New talent is also featured with singer Siobhan Miller and guitarist Stephen Wright.

“I am delighted to have been invited to take part in this concert. It's important to keep these vital songs alive and to add new material to the repertoire. And it is good to be back playing with some of the key exponents of political song in Scotland.”

Arthur Johnstone is having a busy Celtic Connections. In addition  to the Tony Benn event and Songs of Struggle, he also featured in the Red Clydeside concert on the 25 January in which the songs of the late singer-songwriter and campaigner Alistair Hulett, especially his suite of songs featured on his 2002 Red Clydeside album with Dave Swarbrick, were performed by Arthur, rising star Ewan McLennan, and other special guests including singer-songwriter Karine Polwart and Gavin Livingstone. The great political song doyen Roy Bailey finished off the night.

“Jimmy Reid said during the UCS work-in that folk music has no meaning unless it expresses the lives and struggles of ordinary people. It is good that Celtic Connections is keeping that link prominent in the festival.”

Songs of Struggle continues what is fast becoming a tradition since the UCS Work-In 40 Anniversary concert in 2011, showcasing working and protest songs with a movable line-up of artists. It is part of the 'red thread' running through this year's Celtic Connections.

Put together by FairPley – a small company who organise events for the labour and non-profit-making sector – it follows Jimmy Reid's observation - folk music has no meaning unless it expresses the lives and struggles of ordinary people.
